I know that it’s already almost halfway through December and I still have yet to put the requisite “how I decorated my house for Christmas” pictures, but I promise they are coming. This year, since I will be in California for Christmas and the Fireman will be working, I decided not to go all out on our decorations like I did last year (it was so crazy it took two posts). It’s partly because I don’t want to have to deal with cramming in undecorating on top of a crazy work schedule when I get home, and it’s partly because I’m just lazy. Not too many decorations made it on the tree this year (which you can’t tell because it’s such a scraggler to begin with), but the ones that did were special.
On Black Friday, I found these suckers for 49 cents a piece, and decided that we should make some ornaments for this year.
Pretty simple. They’re acrylic, so they shouldn’t sustain any damage during the off season, and let’s face it, I’m a total butterfingers, so breakable things should not be put around me. Last week I dropped a container of yogurt and an egg on the kitchen floor. Things are not safe around me.
Using acrylic paint that we had on hand, we just squirted in the colors we wanted and moved the ornaments around to let the paint spread. Here’s my tip: use the paint sparingly. We made these on Thursday night. The Fireman’s STILL has wet paint in it.
After the paint has done its thang, make sure you dump the excess paint.
It can either be done by
smashing tapping the ornament upside down or your can just hold it upside down (if you have the patience).
Once that was done, we used Elmer’s Glue to make our initials and then sprinkled on glitter. As you can see, the Fireman went a little crazy with the glitter and really hates getting his picture taken.
DO NOT tap the excess glitter off; it will cause the wet glue to shift. Let them dry for at least a day and then carefully wipe the glitter off. Check to see that the insides are dry, pop the tops on, and hang them!
They’re pretty sweet, and I love that they’re personalized.
Have y’all made any ornaments? I remember making them when I was little, and lately I’ve seen some bombdotcom ones around the web.
These are from Jen over at IHeart Organizing. How adorable are they?? I love the one thats full of the glitter pom poms. There are so many options!!
Craft away, chittlens, and show me what you’re making!!
