Way back in August (WOAH) I talked about making a frame wall in our hallway. And then something shiny drifted by and I got distracted. But no more! Yesterday, I got so annoyed by the frames that were cluttering up the hallway floor that I busted out my brand spanking new addition to the house…the wall.
You’ll remember that it originally looked like this:
It was a pretty simple process. It took me a few hours to do because I was by myself, but I think if it was two people you’d be able to bust it out in an hour or two. First I traced the frames on magazine paper and cut them to size and labeled each cutout.
Then I laid out the pictures on the floor to decide how I wanted to group them. I used approximate measures for the wall size.
Then I stuck the paper up on the wall to make sure it all fit correctly.
I did the same process on the opposite wall…
After that, all I had to do was put the pictures up! Since we’re renting the apartment, the Fireman and I don’t want to have to do much patching on the walls when we move out, so I used Command hooks and Wall Mounting Tape to secure all the frames.
Admittedly, this was one of the longest processes of the whole project. Every corner of every frame had two pieces of tape on it to guarantee sticking. I don’t need to be woken in the middle of the night to frames crashing to the ground. After everything was taped off, I used a level to check that all the frames were straight and stuck the frames on the wall. Clearly I don’t have a picture of this, because AS COOL AS IT WOULD BE, I don’t have 3 arms enabling me to level out a frame and take a picture of it…
Back to life on the farm.
After all the frames were put on the wall, this is what I was left with:
Eventually there will be a big canvas in that large empty spot above ^. One DIY at a time, people. Pretty easy, huh? I loooooove my frame walls so much! And its so nice to have a hallway floor again. I forget that they’re all up everytime I walk down the hallway. And if you’re wondering, here’s a list of what is on those walls:
A vintage blue frame I scored for $3
The Fireman’s formal Air Force picture
A strange MacBook photo shoot my sister and I did
The only print I’ll ever own from MOMA
A picture of Elvis I ripped out of a magazine in 2007
The plane ticket from the day I moved here
A Xmas present
2 fire pictures of the Fireman and his Fireman brother
A housewarming present
An old music sheet
A panel of the wallpaper from my bedroom in CA
A piece of wood with an arrow on it that my mother made in summer camp
An old picture of Mt. Washington my Gramp gave me when I was little
And a poster of the Moulin Rouge that I got…at (yep, you guessed it) the Moulin Rouge. In 2005.
This was the Fireman’s housewarming present…totally NOT my idea, borrowed it from here (Young House Love, duh).
This is my newest find…part of an old music book I found for $1 while I was
doing laundry shopping.
Oh, and the best part of this whole thing is that the center of the frame wall is a giant breaker box that I covered with a removable frame…
Pretty and functional. Just the way I like things. On a completely different note, the Fireman and I started saying the military alphabet (alpha, bravo, charlie, delta, etc) back and forth last night and I kept coming up with strange words…fragile, lemongrass, etc. Weird, right?
