This is a very, very serious topic. Have you ever looked at your closet and felt a tightness in your chest? Difficulty breathing? Heart palpitations? If so, you may be suffering from Organizational Induced Chest Pain. Seek help immediately!!
I was suffering from a severe case of OICP…here’s why.
Yep. That was my side of the closet. This was the Firemans…
For a total look of…
Cue the chest tightness, difficulty breathing, etc. You now understand my immediate call to my mother with some screaming, a little crying, gasping, and other theatrical noises.
I found this picture in an old issue of Good Housekeeping magazine:
And immediately fell head over heels for it. I love the design, the boxes, the organization of it all. Of course my closet will never look like this, but its definitely worth a decent try. I took some measurements and headed out to the Christmas Tree Shop (aka Heaven on Earth).
I found these suckers for $9.99 a pop…
Not the greatest picture but you get the idea. They’re 15″x15″ and fold up easily for storage, which is great. I found a couple more good baskets for purse storage and other things. I also found this sweet little basket at TJ Maxx:
Love the design of it. So after my mother came over and helped me organize all the clothes by usage, length, etc and boxed up all the shoes, I hung some amazingly versatile 3M hooks on the wall for smaller purses to hang on. The clothes got folded more precisely and not just thrown on the shelves. All of the stuff that wasn’t a necessity for the clothes closet was moved to the other closet, like the comforter and the dresses. And this is what we were left with…
^This is my side of the closet…
^And this is the Fireman’s side.
I have severe clothing problems. It’s okay, I’m dealing with it. Slowly. Now that my OICP is slowly dissapating, I’m trying to figure out some more ways to organize. As you can see in the Fireman’s side, the top hanging shelf is lowered enough that his shirts hang over the second shelf. Kind of a pain in the butt. If we were to want to move them, we’d have to unscrew the shelving units and rescrew them into the walls. They’ve been lowered already (we can see the higher holes). Right now it’s more of a pain in the butt to move them than to leave them where they are.
At least I get excited now when I look in there. It’s just my OCD being placated.
